Hibiscus Citrus Zest Tea

Native to N. Africa, where it is called “Karkade”, this super popular brewed tea has spread all over the world, especially where the climate is hot because it helps prevent dehydration. Hibiscus tea is made from the “calix” which is the protective pod around the flower. Note that they don’t look anything like the Hawaiian hibiscus flowers you see everywhere. The calyces have to be peeled by hand off the dried flower - it’s painstaking work. Appreciating how much work goes into producing Hibiscus tea adds to the pleasure of drinking this world-renowned tea!

This stuff is delicious! If you've had red zinger, you'll love this. The hibiscus and lemon are absolutely delicious. I've had no issue with brewing or off tastes. I'll get this every time.

This tea has more ingredients than might be expected, including blackberry leaves and dates. Nonetheless, it is properly called “Hibiscus Citrus Zest” because that captures its aroma and flavor.

I have discovered hibiscus tea relatively recently as an alternative to my favorite herbal/flower tea (rosehip). It has a similarly sour/tart taste infused with dark berries which I love. My wife prefers to sweeten it up with some honey.
