Naturally fermented to yield a deep red color and robust, earthy flavor that is slightly sweet with notes of honey and vanilla; excellent with milk or a squeeze of lemon.
South Africa's unique caffeine-free tea, rooibos, produces a deep red liquid with a full body that has made it popular all over the world. Called "the red tea", rooibos is often compared to black tea because it combines well with milk and thus can replace black tea for a caffeine-free tea. Rooibos is slightly sweet with notes of honey and vanilla. Unlike black tea, it isn't astringent because it is low in both tannins and oxalic acid.
The rooibos shrub grows only in the mountainous Cedarberg region of the western S. African Cape. It is a native member of the "fynbos" biome, part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest but most biodiverse of the world's 6 floral kingdoms. A leguminous bush similar to broom, Rooibos has fine needles that naturally start to ferment when oxidized during harvesting, turning from a green to a deep red color.
Containing the unique antioxidant, Aspalathin, rooibos has many health benefits from its diverse free radical-fighting polyphenols that studies show contribute to heart health and good gut health among other benefits. This extraordinary herb, with its very long taproot that draws up water and minerals from deep in the earth, has the ability to survive severe weather conditions. As a result, its leaves are full of beneficial nutrients that help protect our bodies.
